Notable Interred:
W.T. Carter, Sr. (1856-1921)

A name that stands out in Houston and Texas lumber industry history is William T. Carter’s. For more than half a century, Carter served as a leader in civic work and development.

Carter was one of the best-known lumbermen in the southwest, with large holdings in East Texas. He invented a portable steel sawmill that could be moved to follow the forest.

He and his wife Maude Holley contracted notable architect Birdsall Briscoe to design their home at 14 Courtlandt Place, a house that is now considered one of the finest in Houston. The historic Courtlandt Place is of interest as it is a single residential street and historic district all owned by the residents, not the City of Houston.

W.T. Carter, Sr.’s legacy continued through his adopted son, William Thomas Carter, Jr. (1887-1957). He and his wife Lillie Auguste Neuhaus Carter built their home at 18 Courtlandt Place. Carter Jr. went on to create Houston’s first public airport, W. T. Carter Field. The airport was privately owned for 10 years before it was bought by the city and renamed in honor of Governor William P. Hobby after his death in 1967.

Taphophobia is the fear of being buried alive. This fear was so strong during the 18th and 19th centuries that safety coffins were invented.

One method used in prevention of premature burial was a simple cord attached to a bell used to attract outside attention. The bell hook was located at the head or the foot of the grave.

It is very rare today to find a safety bell or a hook that held the bell in a cemetery. Glenwood Cemetery has a few of these original hooks in one of our older sections in the cemetery.

Notable Interred at Glenwood Cemetery:
John F. Staub (1892-1981)

One of Houston’s finest residential architects from 1921 to his retirement in 1963, we have John Staub to thank for the River Oaks Country Club (his first solo commission), Ima Hogg’s mansion at Bayou Bend, and six of the homes in Courtlandt Place—five of which are individually designated as Houston landmarks.

After serving two years in the Navy, John Staub established his own architectural practice in Texas. He specialized in designing single-family homes according to popular European styles. Throughout his career, he contributed to the design of over 30 homes in River Oaks and also designed homes in Broadacres.

He was twice appointed to the Houston City Planning Commission and served on the Advisory Committee of the Bayou Bend Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Outside of his residential work, Staub designed the parish house of Palmer Memorial Church, the Junior League Building, the Bayou Club, the Fondren Library at Rice University (among other buildings at the university), as well as buildings at the University of Houston and in the Texas Medical Center.

Do you know the difference between a monument, headstone, marker, and family plaque? These are all familiar, lasting tributes to loved ones, made to serve as a point of remembrance for future generations.

Monuments and headstones are likely the most familiar. The headstone is the most common memorial for a grave site. They are typically a piece of rock that sits erect on the ground, allowing those passing by to easily identify the person. You can add any details you desire on a headstone, such as name, birth and death date, a quote, and more. Monuments are often the same shape as headstones, but much larger and more ornate.

A marker is a smaller option for a memorial. A cemetery marker often sits flat or slightly angled to make it easier to read. This is the easiest memorial to maintain. The marker allows for the same basic information as a headstone to be printed.

With family plots, there is usually a plaque engraved with the family name marking the area, and then each family member who is buried in the family area will have an individual marker placed.

When visiting Glenwood Cemetery, you may spot a Western Cattle Egret.

These birds originate from Africa and came to America in 1953. It wasn’t until just last year that Cattle Egrets were split into eastern and western classifications. They’re often found in agricultural areas near wetlands, and in warm, tropical parts of the south, making the Bayou City the perfect home for them.

Western Cattle Egrets are natural exterminators due to their diet of insects. They find food by picking bugs off of larger animals, often found foraging at the feet of cows, hence the name “Cattle Egret.” They’ll even fly toward smoke from far distances to catch insects fleeing a fire.

Upon your next visit to Glenwood, when you spot a short, thick-necked, white heron with yellow plumes on its head, you’ll know that you’ve spotted a Cattle Egret.

Notable Interred at Glenwood Cemetery:
Agnese Carter Nelms (1889-1967)

Agnes Carter Nelms was a pioneer in the birth control movement in Texas and a devout advocate for affordable healthcare. Her philanthropic work served poor women in Houston, and she collaborated with her brother-in-law, Dr. Judson Taylor, to open the Maternal Health Center—the city’s first family planning clinic.

Agnes was born into a wealthy family but was always taught the responsibility of helping those less fortunate. After opening River Oaks Elementary School and becoming its first PTA president, she dedicated her life to social work and women’s healthcare. To raise awareness of the Maternal Health Center, Nelms and other volunteers launched a door-to-door campaign encouraging women to vote, subtly promoting the birth control clinic.

Despite brutal backlash from Houston newspapers, the Catholic Church, and other societal members, Agnes would eventually help establish the Birth Control League of Texas in 1936 and was elected its first president. She played a pivotal role in establishing birth control clinics across the state and lobbying for its inclusion in the state public health program. However, family planning services were not authorized by the Texas Department of Health until 1965.

Thanks to Agnes’ advocacy, less privileged women across Texas gained access to free healthcare and birth control. Additionally, she and Dr. Taylor collaborated to establish Houston’s first airport, Carter Field, in 1927, now known as Hobby Airport.

Duckling Update:

The Black-Bellied Whistling Ducklings are growing up! They will be flying soon but will stay with their parents until they are six months old. These juveniles are duller than adults, with dark bills, pale chests, and mottled black belly. These ducks tend to live in large flocks of around 1,000 birds and spend a lot of time on the ground and on the trees.

A romantic breed of ducks, they form strong monogamous bonds and often stay together for many years. This trait is unique for ducks and is more often associated with swans and geese. Like humans, the parents will share the work of raising their young ones, who will stay close to mom and dad for several more months despite being able to feed themselves immediately and leap from their nest within two days of hatching.

Charles Dillingham (1837-1917)

Charles Dillingham held various titles throughout his life, starting as Captain in the 2nd Vermont Infantry during the Civil War, later rising to Major and Lieutenant Colonel in the 8th Vermont Infantry from 1861 to 1863.

After serving in the Union Army, Charles Dillingham relocated to New Orleans before settling in Houston in 1885. He became a railroad man and worked as receiver of the Houston and Texas Central Railway. When the South Texas National Bank was formed, he became first vice-president and later was promoted to president, then chairman of the board.

His home at 3214 Austin St. was donated to serve as the headquarters of the Child Guidance Center.

The Quercus Virginia, or the Cemetery Oak, is part of Glenwood Cemetery’s impressive collection of trees.

Our famous oak tree is an enigma, as no one is sure how old it is or how it got there. Evidence suggests the tree is around 130 years old, but the exact age is unknown. Some suspect the tree was already growing in Glenwood when the first grave was dug, while others believe it was planted in the walkway intentionally.

This live oak is a massive, charismatic tree with branches that spread outward and mingle with the nearby graves. It has grown to be 64 ft tall with a trunk that’s “wide as a Volkswagen.”

Live oaks thrive in humid coastal areas, which is why Houston is home to many. If you visit Glenwood Cemetery, take a moment to appreciate the historic beauty that is our Cemetery Oak.

The Texas Snapping Turtle is one of Glenwood Cemetery’s most unique and interesting fauna. Visitors will have the highest chances of encountering a snapping turtle during breeding season when they can be found traveling across the land. During this time, these usually docile creatures can be aggressive and should be observed from a respectful distance to avoid their powerful, sharp jaws.

The common snapping turtle is a species of large freshwater turtle in the family Chelydridae. They can be found across the continent, from southeastern Canada to the edge of the Rocky Mountains and as far east as Nova Scotia and Florida.

Notable Interred:
Rienzi Melville Johnston (1849–1926)

Rienzi Melville Johnston was a notable journalist and politician. His legacy spans from serving as the editor of the Houston Post for over three decades, from 1885 to 1919, to his brief but significant 29-day term in the U.S. Senate in 1913.

Originally from Georgia, Johnston's journey into journalism began in a print shop before his service in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Johnston's influence extended beyond journalism into Texas politics, where he became a leading figure in the Democratic Party. He served on the Democratic National Committee from 1900 to 1912, solidifying his role as a political heavyweight.
Johnston's time in the Senate coincided with significant legislative changes, notably the nationwide prohibition of alcohol. Returning to Texas after his Senate term, Johnston resumed his editorial duties at the Houston Post until his retirement in 1919. He then ventured into state politics, serving in the Texas Senate from 1917 to 1920, where he was elected President pro tempore in 1918.

He passed away in 1926 and was laid to rest in Glenwood Cemetery, leaving a lasting impact on journalism, politics, and the state of Texas. He is the namesake of Rienzi, the River Oaks home of his grandson, Harris Masterson I.

Glenwood Cemetery is home to a diverse array of creatures, including the striking Yellow Orb Weaver Garden Spider. These impressive arachnids craft elaborate circular webs, aided by their unique additional claw.

Their webs are adorned with a distinctive zigzagging X-shaped pattern known as a stabilimentum, believed to serve as a warning to birds and to minimize the risk of accidental destruction. The spider can re-spin its web each night.

Female Yellow Orb Weavers are black with symmetrical patches of bright yellow along the top side of their abdomen. Their legs are reddish brown at the base and black toward the tips. Males are smaller and less striking in their coloration but do still feature the species’ signature yellow on their abdomen.

A male seeks out a female and courts her by plucking at her web. After mating, the female deposits one or more egg sacs on her web, from which offspring emerge in late summer or autumn. In colder regions, the young spiders may overwinter in a dormant state within the egg sac, emerging in spring.

The average lifespan of these creatures is about one year, and females usually die in the first hard frost after mating. If temperatures are favorable, females may live several years.

Have no fear should you encounter the Yellow Orb Weaver while touring Glenwood’s gardens this summer. Their venom is harmless for humans and only immobilizes prey such as flies, bees, and other flying insects.
